Marta Dusseldorp and Anita Hegh feature in Australian playwright Anthony Weigh's Like A Fishbone, as part of Sydney Theatre Company's Next Stage program. The production, directed by Tim Maddock, is a collaboration with Griffin Theatre Company following last year's successful Wharf 2 co-production of Ross Mueller's Concussion. Performances are at Wharf 1 from 16 July to 7 August 2010.
In a small rural community an unspeakable crime has left its mark. Months later, in her studio many miles away, a successful architect (Marta Dusseldorp) is preparing to present her plans for a memorial to the tragedy when the unexpected arrival of a visitor, the mother of one of the victims (Anita Hegh), interrupts proceedings.
On this night two extraordinary women collide, waging a personal battle between religious faith and humanism, grief and commemoration - a battle of ideology that will change both of their lives.
Last year Marta Dusseldorp received a Helpmann Award for her portrayal of Queen Margaret in Sydney Theatre Company's TheWar of The Roses while Anita Hegh was acknowledged earlier this year with a Sydney Theatre Award for her performance in the Company's The City by Martin Crimp. For Griffin, Hegh has performed in King Tide and The Emperor of Sydney. Tim Maddock previously directed Soldiers, one of two plays by Daniel Keene comprising The Serpent's Teeth for Sydney Theatre Company.
Playwright Anthony Weigh is also known to Sydney audiences as an actor and has performed in Sydney Theatre Company's Julius Caesar, Hedda Gabler and Major Barbara. His award winning play, 2,000 Feet Away, had its premiere at Belvoir in 2007 and went on to have a UK production at The Bush, London and a US production at Steep Theatre in Chicago. Like a Fishbone will also have a production at The Bush in London in 2010.
Next Stage is Sydney Theatre Company's artform development strand existing alongside the Company's Main Stage, Back Stage and Education programs. Next Stage aims to offer different types of experiences for Sydney audiences, to develop new approaches to theatre and to collaborate with other companies and emerging artists.
Griffin Theatre Company is widely regarded as Australia's leading new writing theatre. The Company has a history of fostering playwrights, actors and theatre-makers, and continues to bring the highest quality new Australian work to national and international attention.
