Concussion, the second production of Sydney Theatre Company's 2009 Next Stage program is a
violent, sprawling and brutally funny play by Ross Mueller, produced and presented in partnership
with Griffin Theatre Company. An ensemble cast of Rachel Gordon, Belinda McClory, Sam North,
Chris Ryan, Luke Ryan and Terry Serio are directed by Brett Adam with design by Sydney Theatre
Award-winning team Brad Clark and Alexandra Sommer. Performances are at Sydney Theatre
Company's Wharf 2 from 13 March 2009.
The action of Concussion takes place in the past and the present with scenes from various points
across a two day period. Somewhere in a busy city, a policeman wakes to discover he has forgotten his life. He's been assaulted by an unknown assailant and has no memory of the past and no clear sense of the present. A doctor - or is it his partner? - is caring for him, but she has her own problems managing a disastrous relationship with an ex partner and his troubled brother. And then there's the salacious details his son is posting on a blog.
Ross Mueller's play The Ghost Writer was presented by Melbourne Theatre Company in 2007. Other
plays include Construction of the Human Heart (short listed for the New York New Dramatists Award), The Glory (winner of 2007 Wal Cherry Award), No Man's Island, Great Ocean Road, Colosseum and A Pilot Version of Something To Die For (short listed for the 2008 Green Room Award for Best New Play).
Concussion has been developed through the 2008 National Play Festival, was the winner of the New York New Dramatists Award and was short-listed in 2008 for both the Griffin Prize and the Patrick White Award.
Next Stage is Sydney Theatre Company's artform development strand existing alongside the
Company's Main Stage, Back Stage and Education programs, all programmed by Artistic Directors
Andrew Upton and
Cate Blanchett. Next Stage aims to offer different types of experiences for Sydney audiences, to develop new approaches to theatre and to collaborate with other companies and emerging artists.
Celebrating its thirtieth year, Griffin has a strong history of fostering emerging playwrights, actors and theatre-makers, and continues to bring to national attention the best new writing in Australia.
