Kate Grenville's award-winning novel, The Secret River, will be adapted for the stage by Andrew Bovell (When The Rain Stops Falling, Lantana) for performance in for early 2013 by Sydney Theatre Company.

The production will premiere in January 2013 as part of Sydney Festival, followed by performances in Canberra as part of the Centenary of Canberra's year-long program and at the Perth International Arts Festival.

Neil Armfield will direct for STC for the first time in thirteen years, collaborating with choreographer Stephen Page. The rest of the creative team and the cast will be announced.

Set in the early 19th century, The Secret River explores the conflict between transported thief William Thornhill and the Darug people who own the land he tries to settle.
