There is no reason to be bored or at home during Spring as Adelaide blooms an entire nursery worth of shows to be seen. Unable to highlight all of them due to the large volume of high quality productions on offer, here are just a few highlights of what to catch over the coming months in Adelaide.
9 September - 2 October: BURIED CHILD - State Theatre Company, Dunstan Playhouse
The State Theatre Company is currently presenting a wonderfully acted and produced version of Sam Shepard's BURIED CHILD. Both funny and eerie, this play is one worth seeing. Don't forget that Under 30s can get tickets for under $30 and full price is still only $49.
1 October - 8 October: SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION - OPUS Performing Arts Community, Hopgood Theatre
Running only 90 minutes, John Guare's SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION was a Broadway (and then film) hit full of mystery, wit and drama. A sudden arrival of a young stranger throws the high society lives of a New York couple into disarray. Who is he and how does he know them well? You better get to Hopgood Theatre and find out!
7 - 15 October: BUDDY - Marie Clark Musical Theatre, Arts Theatre
A hit in Adelaide 2 years ago, BUDDY is back, this time brought back to life by Marie Clark Musical Theatre. This show is one rocking good time and will have you dancing in the aisles to Buddy's biggest hits.
14 - 29 October: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - Northern Lights Theatre Company, Shedley Theatre
Disney's famous retelling of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST will be beautifully presented by Northern Lights Theatre Company in October. Adding 7 new songs to the famous movie score, this Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice musical will ensure a wonderful night out for all musical lovers.
19 - 29 October: THE MIKADO - Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Scott Theatre
The Gilbert and Sullivan Society is back with a twist on a classic. According to press notes, G&S have "created a fun, absurd and up tempo production of this wonderfully silly and much loved opera. Re-orchestrated by musical director Ross Curtis, this show will delight all ages with its up-tempo Broadway style approach."
20 October - 5 November: LIPS TOGETHER, TEETH APART - MixEd Salad, Star Theatres
Having had to put their production of NINETY off until next year, MixEd Salad have filled the gap with Terrance McNally's LIPS TOGETHER, TEETH APART, a story of two straight couples in a gay community on Fire Island over the July 4th weekend. The couples cannot seem to find much in their life to party about, unlike the houses on either side of them.
21 October - 13 November: HOLDING THE MAN - State Theatre Company, Dunstan Playhouse
HOLDING THE MAN is Timothy Conigrave's real life story of growing up gay in Australia. Having had a successful run on London's West End last year, this funny and moving play is sure to be another hit for the State Theatre Company.
3 November (one night only): THE SUM OF US - Country Arts SA, Hopgood Theatre
Described by The New York Times as 'a story about hopes and dreams, laughter and sadness, but most of all about the power of love', this play is a story of a father and son trying to reconnect and find acceptance.
11 - 19 November: GYPSY - Kapunda Players, Chapel Street Theatre
This one for the regional folk, Laurents and Sondheim's GYPSY is bringing Broadway to Kapunda. This classic Broadway gem is on that cannot be missed.
Apologies to those shows we were not able to highlight!
