SLY RAT THEATRE CO. is excited to announce its first production of 2017 is Shakespeare's enigmatic fantasy, THE TEMPEST!

Following the blockbuster success of 2016's A Midsummer Night's Dream, the SLY RAT circus is rolling back into town, right on down to the banks of the beautiful Maribyrnong River. It's a free event! Pack a picnic, bring the family - February nights are gonna' be magic!

In association with THE LIVING MUSEUM OF THE WEST, MARIBYRNONG CITY COUNCIL and major partner SEDDON COMMUNITY BANK, SLY RAT THEATRE CO. are pullin' out all the stops to bring folks in the western suburbs a vision of Shakespeare they'll never forget.

The arch-scientist, Prospero, lives in exile on a desolate island with his cloistered daughter, Miranda. The vengeful spirit, Ariel, awaits his every command. The monster, Caliban stalks the shores waiting for the moment he might exact revenge on his ruthless, brooding master. And so it is, every hour, everyday - for twelve long years. One fated afternoon, tall masts loom on the horizon - the royal fleet of Alonso, the King of Milan, and Prospero's duplicitous sister, Antonio are on their way. A tempest rumbles over the island's secret, turquoise bays. Judgement is coming. The future is about to be written!

Starring a raging storm-cell of Melbourne's finest independent performers: BRENDAN EWING as Prospero, last seen wowing crowds in Sly Rat's The Dream (2016). HARRY TSENG as Ariel, following up his stunning turn in MTC's hit, Jasper Jones (2016). KATHARINE INNES as Antonio (La Mama's The Night Sings It's Song). LETITIA SUTHERLAND as King Alonso. KATHERINE MOSS as Stephano. Sly Rat's Shakespeare on the Maribyrnong River is The Bard at his most bombastic, accessible, and rock and roll!

Sly Rat Theatre Co.'s artistic directors - Alan Chambers and Andy Harmsen - have concocted a spectacular and utterly unique vision for THE TEMPEST in 2017. Inspired by science-fiction classics such as The Island of Dr. Moreau and The Planet of the Apes, Sly Rat brings the spectacle of ballet, the tragedy of opera, the delight of clowns, and stunning visual effects to Pipemaker's Park. THE TEMPEST will re-define what an outdoor Shakespeare event can be!

The West's warm summer nights are set to become a lot hotter as SLY RAT THEATRE CO. and their cohort descend on the picturesque riverbanks of the heritage listed Pipemaker's Park in Maribyrnong.

Performed at sunset on the beautiful banks of the Maribyrnong River, this free event is set to become one of the hottest dates on Melbourne's summer arts calendar. Bring your picnic blanket and a hamper full of goodies. Lie back with friends and family to enjoy 'The Bard's' mysterious, beguiling, epic fantasy. Shakespeare on the Maribyrnong River is perfect for the whole family!

In 2016, A Midsummer Night's Dream played to over 2000 people across its 6, sun-baked summer evenings in February. With THE TEMPEST, Sly Rat Theatre Co. hopes to grow this unique outdoor, theatrical experience - re-imagining one of the 'The Bard's' most enigmatic works. They are set to entertain, beguile, and mystify a whole new generation of folks in the Western suburbs. The show will premiere next year on Friday the 17th of February and play over three warm, summer weekends.
