Queensland Theatre Company and Sydney Theatre Company present Harold Pinter's classic No Man's Land, starring Australian theatre greats Peter Carroll and John Gaden. The show is an exploration of memory, full of Pinter's unexpected humour and wit, and hits the Brisbane stage from 19 September before transferring to Sydney.
No Man's Land features Hirst, a fading London literatus and Spooner, a free-spirited booze-hound, poet and yarn-spinner. The pair spend one night at Hirst's decaying mansion drinking litres of spirits, discussing literature, telling stories and meandering through their memories under the gaze of unsavoury manservants Briggs and Foster.
No Man's Land is considered to be Nobel prize-winner Pinter at his best, and excerpts from the play were read at his funeral to honour his final wishes. Pinter's career spanned 50 years and he received a Companion of Honour and an Order of the British Empire for his work. He died in December 2008.
Director Michael Gow said "No Man's Land is a play that encompasses the best qualities of Pinter's work - there's the precisely sparse dialogue, the sense of menace, the wry humour and characters that refuse to be specific about their history or their intentions."
"It's great to be tackling this hypnotic and perplexing work with two giants of the Australian theatre - Gaden and Carroll - and welcome back two of Brisbane's favourite actors,
Andrew Buchanan and
Steven Rooke."
