Ahead of the Australian Tour of Rock musical WE WILL ROCK YOU, by Queen and Ben Elton (Book), BroadwayWorld - Sydney was given access to the rehearsals taking place at the ABC Studios in Ultimo. The futuristic story of a group of Bohemians fighting to regain the right to have free will, share ideas, create, express through live music and connect in a world of uniformity and conformity is played out to the backdrop of Queen's iconic music.

The premise of the story is rather pertinent to Sydney's current debate over the restriction of venues and therefore the death of live music due to lockout laws. The work stresses the need for cities to nurture their young artists and give them a place to gather in order to communicate and create and Elton highlighted the need for a theatre and 'pub rock' culture to foster this development

Whilst Australian audiences may have seen earlier incarnations of WE WILL ROCK YOU, Elton advised that each production is updated, and the new Australian Tour will continue this philosophy as it has a new cast, each with their own individuality and a new song has been included to take the modern culture of internet on phones and connecting via Facebook into account. With the focus on live performance, the cast will be backed by a live band which has been approved by members of Queen.

Whilst Queen have had a long held commitment to live rock'n'roll, their iconic Bohemian Rhapsody had never been performed live prior to its inclusion in WE WILL ROCK YOU. With the live band and the full cast, the layered sound that had previously been produced with the help of technology, can be recreated. The cast presented an excerpt from the number and the effect is breathtaking.

The new Australian tour begins at Sydney's Lyric Theatre on 28 April 2016, then travels to the Lyric Theatre, QPAC, Brisbane from 10 July; then on to Melbourne's Regent Theatre from 30 August. Perth's Crown Theatre follows from November, then the Festival Theatre, Adelaide from January, 2017.
