Comedian and classically-trained double bassist Taco Kuiper returns to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival this year, with another hilarious and absurdly relatable double bass comedy production. Reluctantly sharing the limelight with Terry, her double bass, she Will Power through an all-original songbook, providing hysterical insights on current affairs, the beauty of hindsight, sexism, bisexuality, looking after your mental health and the perils of working in the accounting profession. Perhaps Next Time is a show about how to turn regrets into a guide on what the hell you're supposed to be doing as a twenty-something in the twenty-first century. Taco Kuiper is a comedian, singer, actress, dancer, and double bassist - or as she would put it, Melbourne's first quintuple threat.
Over the past ten years, Australian musical comedy has truly become an international force to be reckoned with. From the oft-toted Tim Minchin, to Sammy J, Geraldine Quinn, Gillian Cosgriff and Jude Perl, our festival programs are flooded with brilliant and hilarious songwriters. Eschewing the all-too-familiar (and portable) comedy instruments such as keyboards, guitars and ukuleles, Kuiper realised it's time for Melbourne comedians to really lift their game - literally.
It turns out that Kuiper's unique brand of comedy is just what Melbourne needed - a youthful voice with wit, energy and oodles of talent. Satirical, feminist and a little bit absurd - Taco is Melbourne's most exciting new musical comedian.
After working with Improv and sketch troupes including Mudcrabs, and stunning Melbourne & Sydney audiences in Foreign Woman, Taco Kuiper will return to the Comedy Festival with Perhaps Next Time, showcasing her absurd everyday observations and witty songwriting. The production opens on April 8 and runs for 5 nights. Bookings recommended.
