Post-World War Two Polish migrant brothers Wladyslaw and Ludwik Dutkiewicz held their first Australian exhibition together in February 1951. Pioneers in the use of abstraction in Australian painting, the brothers were essential contributors to modernism in Adelaide and Australia. A new retrospective of their work, Brothers in Arts, has been curated by Wlad?s son, 2008/2009 Nexus Writer-in-Residence Dr Adam Dutkiewicz.
Join exhibition curator Dr Adam Dutkiewicz on Thursday, 19 November at 5.30pm as he speaks about a selection of works produced by his late father, Wlad, and late uncle, Ludwik, dating from post-war Germany to their last decades in Australia. The artworks show the brothers' determined commitment to experimentation in the face of a conservative orthodoxy when they arrived in Adelaide and the evolution of their independent styles over more than fifty years.
