Nurturing Cultural Diversity Through The Arts, Nexus Gallery is hosting various events in May including an Artist's Talk with Irmina va Niele on May 6 and Cooking Demonstration on May 19.  Nexus Galley is open Tuesday - Friday 10am - 5pm.  The Cabaret will host Cafe Theatre de l'Alliance Francaise on April 29 and 30 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $25 and $15 for Concession and members. On May 1 at 8pm a Flamenco performance by Flamenco Areti with special guest dancer Fernando Mira.  Tickets for all events are available at the door or from Dramatix.   Registration is now open for National Multicultural Arts Symposium 2010: Diversity in the Arts: Theory + Action Nexus Multicultural Arts, Adelaide, 19 - 21 May.  For a complete list of Nexus events visit www.nexus.asn.au

Artist's Talk: Stronghold by Irmina van Niele
Thu 6 May, 12pm
Exhibition until 14 May
Stronghold addresses the experience of cultural memory and loss in relation to basic human belonging. Works by Irmina van Niele, including projected drawings, reference childhood memories of left-behind worlds that are often fragmentary and incoherent, yet contained in dreams or imagination.

Just Like Home by Lisa Hilli
Tolais Cooking Demonstration: Wed 19 May, 4.30pm
Exhibition Opening: Wed 19 May, 6pm-8pm
Part exhibition, part meal, film and biography, Just Like Home explores artist Lisa Hilli's New Guinean and Australian heritage. Just Like Home celebrates the continuation of Tolais cooking traditions (unique to the people of Rabaul, Papua New Guinea) with an Aussie twist. With one simple meal, Lisa Hilli highlights issues of assimilation and cultural adaption. On 19 May, Lisa Hilli and her mother Cathy Hilli will guide and demonstrate a celebratory feast melding Australian and Papua New Guinean cultures, where members of the public can participate in the preparation, cooking and eating of I gir, a traditional Tolais vegetable and chicken dish cooked in banana leaves.
NB: This free cooking workshop is limited to 30 participants only and is on a first come, first served basis; please register your interest in participating by emailing nexus@nexus.asn.au

Lisa Hilli's 2010 touring exhibition is supported by Kultour, an initiative of the Australia Council, and has been developed in partnership with Nexus Multicultural Arts (a Kultour Company Member).

NEXUS CABARET

Cafe Theatre de l'Alliance Francaise

As part of its centenary celebrations recognising 100 years of French language and culture in Adelaide, Alliance Française presents its 24th season of French language cabaret with an entertaining mixture of songs and sketches, including the celebrated comic operetta, Omelette. Voilà! Une soirée mémorable!

Flamenco Puro by Flamenco Areti With special guest dancer Fernando Mira

Flamenco Areti is Adelaide's most exciting and dynamic flamenco ensembles, with a brilliant line-up of musicians and dancers. Flamenco Puro features special guest star Fernando Mira, one of Australia's hottest male dancers, as well as Kieren Ray and Werner Neumann on guitar and the soulful voice of Mari Olivares. Enjoy a night of Flamenco at its pure, sexy best!

The Bearded Gypsy Band and Nice Verdes

The Bearded Gypsy Band is a fresh young act featuring talented locals Tom Boehm (mandolin and violin), Kiah Gossner (bass) and Tom Kneebone (guitar and tin whistle). Drawing inspiration from Cuba to West Africa and beyond, Nice Verdes uses accordion, Cuban tres, guitar, piano, Indian shruti box, stomp box, harmonicas and vocals to create music that is sunny and uplifting.

Monkey Puzzle Tree

Fresh from the WOMADelaide 2010 stage! Monkey Puzzle Tree is a dynamic Adelaide-based ensemble presenting post-romantic original compositions. Ethereal melodies mingle with striking rhythms to create a musical soundscape that is rich, romantic, capricious and complex.

WHO'S THAT CHIK? by Candy Bowers

WHO'S THAT CHIK? brings the urban hip hop experience to Nexus Cabaret. The true story of performer Candy Bowers - raised in western Sydney by a South African mother and Zimbabwean father - WHO'S THAT CHIK? combines hot beats and fiery rhymes with comedy, Broadway and classic storytelling. NATIONAL MULTICULTURAL ARTS SYMPOSIUM 2010

Registrations now open for National Multicultural Arts Symposium 2010: Diversity in the Arts: Theory + Action
Nexus Multicultural Arts, Adelaide, 19 - 21 May
The Diversity in the Arts: Theory + Action symposium provides a significant opportunity to draw on the experience of experts from across Australia who are actively engaged in the production, presentation, research and promotion of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) arts. The symposium includes an exhibition, performances and a full-day forum involving discussion panels and a keynote address by Lyndon Terracini, Artistic Director of Opera Australia.

Discussion topics include:

  • Programming CALD Arts
  • Multiculturalism: perspectives from the past
  • National Perspectives: how is cultural diversity driving contemporary arts practice?

• Cultural Innovation & Leadership: shaping CALD arts towards 2020

The Diversity in the Arts: Theory + Action symposium will: explore a theoretical context for emerging cultural practices within an international framework; identify key emerging trends, artists and advocates; connect participants; set benchmarks for CALD arts; and contribute to a national debate on the future of Australian cultural identity.

This symposium is presented by Nexus Multicultural Arts in partnership with Kultour.

PROPOSALS FOR 2011 NEXUS VISUAL ARTS PROGRAM

The Nexus Visual Arts program is developed each year to present a diverse range of artists working in a diverse range of artforms. Proposals from established and emerging artists and curators from any cultural background, working in any artform, are invited in June each year.

The guidelines and application form for Nexus-supported visual arts exhibitions in the Nexus Gallery for 2011 are online now. Nexus will be accepting completed application forms between 15 June and 30 August 2010. For more information, or to discuss an application, please email nexus@nexus.asn.au
