Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre presents THE ISLAMIC SPECTRUM IN AUSTRALIA, Wednesday, July 29 to Saturday, August 1 at Nexus Cabaret. Following the outstanding success of the The Islamic Spectrum in Australia last year, Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre, will be holding a second PROGRAM this year (2009). Wednesday 29 July ISLAM IN AUSTRALIA - building cultural bridges to the Muslim world. A one-day symposium focusing on the cultural aspects of Islam in Australia, with speakers on art, architecture, food, religion, history and music, who will explore the affirmative influences of contemporary Islamic culture in Australia. Historical, religious and cultural impacts through to the fascinating nature of Islamic arts, this seminar will provide an insightful set of observations to those who attend and supports our national commitment to intercultural understanding and respect.
Friday 31 July YOUTH FORUM
This full day forum is designed for younger audiences with interactive workshops on Islamic music, food, & art. As part of the spectrum, three concerts will be held over three nights and include performances by:

Artworks will be on display by secondary students from the Islamic College of South Australia, featuring works inspired by Adelaide born artist Jeffrey Smart, personal interpretations of multiculturalism and the cycles of nature.

This special event is designed to invite understanding of Islamic culture in Australia across a spectrum of cultural topics. Distinguished speakers will extend our knowledge as well as thinking on the positive influences of contemporary Islamic culture in Australia.

Additionally, Nexus presents a free public lecture with Donna Williams, "Open The Doors."Direct from New York. Supported by Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre Inc. Adelaide, Friday 3 July, 12.30pm, the Art Gallery of South Australia, Radford Auditorium. Donna Williams, from New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art, heads the Multicultural Audience Development Initiative which is recognised as one of America's leading audience building programs. Donna Williams will inspire people in Australia as she discusses how she brought in diverse new audience for the Metropolitan Museum of Art by generating partnerships with ethnic media, community associations, chambers of commerce, educational and religious institutions and individuals. Chispa Flamenca is acclaimed guitarist Aloysius Leeson and dancer Kristy Manuel, united by their passion for presenting high quality, authentic flamenco. Following the Spanish sophistication, gypsy group Golonka, will sweep you into an intoxicating haze of sensual European dance music and warming winter waltzes..
Friday 10th July
Rafa Godoy performs a set from his latest album, a homage to his grandfather, the legendary Colombian composer Rafael Godoy. A rare chance to experience a genuine South American music dynasty. Caliente performs Samba, Choro, Tango, Latin and Baiao blended with Jazz improvisation, original arrangements and compositions. Caliente's fluid line up can include flute, cavaquinho, pandeiro, mandolin and percussion.
Saturday 11th July
Japanese drumming group Matsuri Taiko was formed in 2003 by Elder Conservatorium percussion students. In 2007, this accomplished group developed their skills in Japan and have since performed at many Australian festivals including the OzAsia Moon Lantern Festival. Shakuhachi player Mark Barnett will join them to perform the timeless music of Japanese wandering Zen monks - Honkyoku and Min'yo folk tunes. Shakuhachi music carries you into peaceful, healing and refreshing spaces.

Thursday 16th July, 8pm MONKEY PUZZLE TREE
Comprised of violin, nylon string guitar, piano and percussion; this instrumental quartet will intrigue and charm. Monkey Puzzle Tree create spellbinding original music inspired by classical and contemporary influences from around the world. Prices: $10 adult/ Conc./Memb. $8
Friday 17th & Sunday 19th July, 8pm MEHR ENSEMBLE
Take a journey into the musical depths of ancient Persia with the Mehr Ensemble. "Pure yet complex arrangements that add a new dimension to sounds that lift the human spirit." Prices: $35 adult/ $30 Conc./Memb. /$40 at the door.
DIASPORA GATHERED ADAM GECZY
As part of National Refugee Week, Nexus presents a very special exhibition created by Sydney-based artist Adam Geczy in close association with the Armenian youth network Hye Hoki Inc and the Sydney Armenian community, in remembrance of the Armenian Genocide. Until the 9th July.
