A centuries-old gargoyle atop a church is struck by lightning, plummets into the river below - and is miraculously given life. But is it a blessing or a curse?
Living alone under a bridge by the highway, he awakens one day to find he is being watched. He soon finds that stories can't help but come pouring forth. Stories about his proud and monstrous lineage, his dutiful watch over the church, and of one little girl whose memory refuses to leave him.
The gargoyle sings, screams, plays, and writhes his way through the audience and his memories - but how much of it is the boasting of a fierce monster, and how much is made up to comfort a lonely soul?
Part physical theatre, part song cycle, part monologue, The Gargoyle is a gothic fairy tale about otherness and folklore.Combining electronica landscapes with ancient stories, fans of the classics, the Gothic, and Greek mythology can't afford to miss it.
Fresh from an international tour with the Australian Shakespeare Company's Graduate Players, The Gargoyle is the audacious Melbourne Fringe debut of local performer and writer Jake Matricardi. https://www.instagram.com/jakematricardi He has always been fascinated by mythical creatures, the origin of their stories and the symbolism behind them. The Gargoyle is an exploration of why we've been telling stories since the dawn of time - but from a new perspective.
The gargoyle will awaken at the Butterfly Club Downstairs for seven shows only as part of the 2018 Melbourne Fringe Festival, from the 17-23 September at 10pm. It is a small, intimate space and booking ahead is recommended.
