Melbourne Theatre Company's world premiere production, Melbourne Talam, will be commencing its regional tour at the Mildura Arts Centre on Tuesday 23 May before going on to play at five other leading performing arts venues in Victoria and Launceston College in Tasmania.
This new production by Rashma N. Kalsie explores the notion of belonging, told through the stories of three young people from India trying to make Melbourne their home. It is vibrant and fast-paced theatre, energised with Melbourne's urban intensity and cultural diversity, traversing time and place to put Australia's contemporary social issues centre stage.
MTC Executive Director Virginia Lovett said, 'Each year we take our Education production on tour as part of our mission to make theatre and the creative industries accessible to young people around the state. It is wonderful to be returning to venues we have visited previously as well as venturing to new places, strengthening existing partnerships and establishing new ones. Melbourne Talam has been nurtured through various MTC play development programs and it's wonderful to now be presenting its world premiere production for our 2017 Education tour.'
MTC's tour program features free pre-show talks and post-show Q&As for school groups, and the opportunity for students to participate in free creative workshops that will focus on the themes, ideas and non-naturalistic performance style of the production.
Directed by Petra Kalive, Melbourne Talam is MTC's 2017 Education Production, embodying MTC's commitment to programming theatre that speaks directly to today's young audiences.
Melbourne Talam is on the 2017 VCE Drama Playlist and is travelling to Mildura, Warnambool, Bendigo, Shepparton, Wodonga, Geelong and Launceston, following a three week season at MTC's Southbank Theatre.
The tour is part of MTC's Sharing the Light initiative which is generously supported by the Crown Resorts Foundation and Packer Family Foundation.
