Melbourne Theatre Company today paid tribute to one of Australia's great actors, Wendy Hughes, who passed away yesterday.
Currently in Washington DC with the cast of David Williamson's Rupert, MTC Executive Director Virginia Lovett said, "Wendy Hughes' fine performances with the company will live on in our collective memories and the entire company and, no doubt, our theatre-loving subscribers will be feeling her loss deeply today. She will always be a graceful and luminous part of MTC history and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family," said Ms Lovett.
One of Australia's most respected and popular actors, Wendy Hughes began her association with MTC in the early seventies, not long after her graduation from NIDA, taking on feature roles such as Anya in The Cherry Orchard, Mabel in An Ideal Husband and Sarah in A Touch of the Poet.
Most recently, she appeared for the Company in All About My Mother (2010), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (2007), The Clean House (2006), Amigos (David Williamson, 2004), The Goat or Who is Sylvia? (2003), and Sweet Bird of Youth (2002).
