Hugo Weaving and Pamela Rabe play the duo at the centre of a new Sydney Theatre Company production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses directed by Sam Strong. Exploring "lust, love, manipulation, self interest and sexual politics," the production is at STC’s Wharf 1 with previews from Saturday 31 March.
The cast also includes Justine Clarke, Geraldine Hakewill, Jane Harders, James Mackay, Heather Mitchell, TJ Power and Ashley Ricardo.
About the show "Vicomte de Valmont (Weaving) and the Marquise de Merteuil (Rabe) manipulate all around them with the precision and discipline of master puppeteers, plotting an elaborate game of revenge, seduction, humiliation and cruelty. These combatants will stoop to the lowest levels of deviousness in order to win. Their crossfire is indiscriminate, making casualties of friends and foes alike."
The novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos was adapted for the stage by Christopher Hampton for a Royal Shakespeare Company production in 1985, with a cast featuring Lindsay Duncan, Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson. It was later adapted for the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, and inspired the 1999 film Cruel Intentions which relocated the story to a New York high school.
Hugo Weaving most recently performed on stage in STC’s 2010 production of Uncle Vanya in an award-winning performance directed by Tamás Ascher. Following critically acclaimed performances in Washington last year, the production is revived again in July at the Lincoln Center Festival in New York.
Pamela Rabe’s most recent performance with STC was as Richard III in The War of The Roses for which she received Helpmann and Sydney Theatre Award nominations. She also directed In the Next Room, or the vibrator play as part of STC’s 2011 main stage season and Elling as part of the 2009 season.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses is Sam Strong’s STC debut. Strong is Artistic Director at Griffin Theatre Company and recently directed one of the theatrical highlights of the 2012 Sydney Festival, The Boys.
