Following its critically acclaimed world premiere seasons in 2016, Merrigong Theatre Company is proud to announce the national tour of Letters to Lindy by award-winning playwright, Alana Valentine (Dead Man Brake, Head Full of Love, Parramatta Girls).
Commencing on 22nd June at Illawarra Performing Arts Centre in Wollongong, the tour will head to 21 venues across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Northern Territory.
Commissioned and produced by Merrigong Theatre Company, the touring production will feature the original cast of Jeanette Cronin (TV's Crownies, Janet King and Rake) as Lindy Chamberlain, alongside Glenn Hazeldine, Phillip Hinton and Jane Phegan, and is skillfully directed by Darren Yap (Ladies Day, Miracle City).
The story of Lindy Chamberlain captivated a nation. A mother accused of murdering her child, her claim - that the baby was taken by a dingo - denied and discredited by zealous police and a flawed legal system. The media circus, the rumours, the mob mentality, and a nation's prejudices laid bare. Based on actual letters received by Lindy Chamberlain from members of the public, Letters to Lindy is touching, authentic and provides a deep insight into one of the most compelling legal and human dramas of our times. It paints a singular portrait of the heartbreak, wisdom and resilience of a grieving mother and her 30-year fight for justice.
Merrigong Theatre Company Artistic Director and CEO, Simon Hinton, said "Merrigong is particularly proud of the work we have produced in Letters to Lindy, a part of our continued focus on producing and presenting new Australian work. The story of Lindy Chamberlain is an iconic and important one for all Australians, so we are thrilled to be able to tour it to such a wide audience across the country."
Merrigong Theatre Company manages one of Australia's busiest, most dynamic regional venues - Illawarra Performing Arts Centre in Wollongong, about an hour south of Sydney. The company also manages the city's key civic and community venue, the Wollongong Town Hall.
Under Artistic Director Simon Hinton, Merrigong has developed into a vibrant theatre company in its own right - producing, presenting and touring exciting contemporary theatre and supporting the development of a wide range of theatre-makers.
