Beloved vocalist and Famous Spiegeltent favourite Katie Noonan returns to the tent with Love-Song-Circus, a remarkable collaboration with a group of talented circus performers that merges physical theatre, live music and remarkable historical stories.
Created around a beautiful song cycle inspired by the letters and stories of Australia's early convict women, Love-Song-Circus is an evocative and emotionally engaging performance that combines the textures of folk instrumentation, string quartet, piano and Noonan's angelic voice with the graceful physicality of acrobat/ aerialists Melissa Knowles, Alice Muntz and Billie Wilson Coffey, directed by Yaron Lifschitz.
Staged especially for the intimate surrounds of The Famous Spiegeltent, Love-Song-Circus also celebrates strength, femininity and friendship through physical performance, and is a truly unique and dramatic departure from traditional cabaret and circus styles.
The original inspiration for the project was born when Noonan, a four-time ARIA winning and six time platinum selling artist, read of an exhibition at the National Museum called Love Tokens, which featured 307 tokens dating from 1762-1856, many engraved with messages and images by convicts for the loved ones they had to leave behind.
"This symbol of love captured my imagination immediately - it is a profound glimpse into the minds of the first convicts to come to this land" said Noonan. "As a woman and mother I felt deeply compelled to explore these stories. I soon discovered that the life of the first female convicts is a part of our history that has been explored by few."
