Melbourne's own Taylor Klas (The White Door) is set to star as Joanne from Centrelink in a new cabaret "Joanne's Real World," making its debut at the Butterfly club tonight, 4th of September.
The popular hit of both Melbourne and Sydney's Short + Sweet Festivals (Melbourne 2011 and Sydney 2012), "Joanne's Real World" won Taylor Klas Best Actress and Best Script awards after performing at the gala finals.
"Joanne's Real World" is a comedy cabaret satirising the joys and perils of single mum Joanne and her quest to employ every Australian man, woman, and child irrespective of race, religoin, or age.
Joanne is determined to clean up this one-horse, unemployed town, and she takes no prisoners. Neither the audience nor her piano accompanist are allowed any excuses.
But it's not as ideal as her goal sounds. Joanne's real world is not perfect and is threatening to crash all around her. With her job on the line and her own family in dire need of a reality check, an already uptight Joanne finds herself needing to hold onto anything to maintain some kind of control in her life. Is it possible that she too could end up in the Centrelink queue?
The cabaret features all-original music by Taylor Klas, Emma McGeorge and HAnna Silver (Tinpan Orange, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, 2011).
Silver, an accomplished pianist and composer, is making her acting debut in the show as Melissa the accompanist and the non-conformist.
Written by Petra Glieson and Taylor Klas and directed by Petra Glieson, "Joanne's Real World" is a must see and will play at The Butterfly Club from 4 to 9 September.
