Imagine Dante's journey into the Inferno, but set in 2017. The 7 deadly sins are replaced by Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tinder, Grindr and Youtube. A cacophonous collection of four singers and three musicians nosedive through a Massive LCD Screen. Bizarre, unexpected and thought provoking, Raising 'Ell is the latest cabaret offering by Ella Filar.

Raising 'Ell! defies the inane distraction of byte-size news, knee-jerk trolling and offensive exchanges dominating cyberspace. Seven 'insignificant others' belt out bitterly funny 'Klezma funk' songs to live music, making you wonder whether we can we crawl back out of the Internet Inferno.

With her performance roots in Left-Of-Berlin, Eastern European Soviet bloc, Filar harks back to the political nature of cabaret when it was original, cutting, raw, rude and provocative. Filar's work remains true to the original nature of the genre, fitting perfectly with the program focus for the 2017 Melbourne Cabaret Fringe Festival at The Butterfly Club.

"Are we real or VIRTUAL?' ponders Filar. "Once we've been posted, pinged, tweeted and swiped right, left and right again, all we're left with is the bizarre multiple distortions of projected self. This is no entertainment for entertainment's sake; this is intensely political and socially charged Kabaret with a 'K'!"

Raising 'Ell! is full of Filar's trademark wit, punning and much lauded musicality. It is a unique work that will stay with you, and perhaps make you think twice before logging on to your device.

'...all the songs and the music are world class, with that smoky, jagged, disturbing Weimar feel.' Stage Whispers
