Emma is married to Robert. But for seven years, she's been having an affair with Jerry, Robert's best friend.
AVID & Tangled Web Theatre Productions unite in their production of Harold Pinter's arresting relationship drama Betrayal, directed by Bruce Cochrane featuring Michael Fenemore, Eleni Miller, Matthew Laurence and Tim Constantine.
Betrayal begins at the end of the affair, and pursues an enthralling journey to its very beginnings. As memory reels backwards towards the moment the affair started, the lies tangle into a web of deception, and betrayal begets betrayal. Of the countless eternal love triangles written for the stage, few have matched Nobel Prize-winner Harold Pinter's gripping depiction of infidelity - as intricate as a spy novel with its cross and double cross.
Inspired by Pinter's clandestine extramarital affair with BBC Television presenter Joan Bakewell, which spanned seven years, from 1962 to 1969, the plot of Betrayal integrates different permutations of betrayal relating to a seven-year affair involving a married couple, Emma and Robert, and Robert's "close friend" Jerry. Betrayal is lean and tersely naturalistic, with none of the surreal comic menace of his earlier plays. The real stroke of genius was to tell the story in reverse. With its ingenious twist - pure Pinter - this is without a doubt an affair to remember.
AVID in collaboration with Tangled Web Theatre Productions are proud to bring this timeless, intricate work to the stage this November. Betrayal is on 15th - 19th November for 6 shows only 8pm (Matinees Sat 18th & Sun 19th at 2pm). Performances will take place at the Northcote Town Hall, Studio 2.
