Small Gallery: Nicholas Harder
Land Like Mine - Recent Paintings
3 - 21 April (closed over Easter)

Nicholas Harder was living on the green outskirts of Melbourne when he first exhibited at fortyfivedownstairs in 2007. Then in 2008 he brought back his first images from Central Australia. Since then Nicholas has spent much time exploring the landscapes of Kakadu and now lives in Alice Springs. These works on paper are vibrant and intense – drenched with the myriad colours of Northern and Central Australia.

Large Gallery: Peter Garnick
Without A Trace
3 - 21 April (closed over Easter)

Peter Garnick's photographic essay is also concerned with memory, and in this case, sadly, the disappearance of a significant aspect of our industrial and rural history. The 50 year old Western Districts Grampian's Wool Scour was decommissioned in February 2009, and has since been sold and shipped to China, where Australia's wool will be processed more cheaply. Garnick captured imagery of workers, machines and environment during the Scour's final days of operation.

In conjuntion with Peter's exhibition, Musica Intima presents Sambalamento! Ken Murray (guitar), Ken Schroder (saxophone) and Denis Close (percussion) will perform Bossa Nova, samba and choro in the large gallery. See our website for details.

Small Gallery: Beck Wheeler
Gone Bush
24 April – 5 May

Beck Wheeler was born in Germany, raised in England and has spent large parts of her life in both New Zealand and Australia.
She has drawn on both European and Antipodean influences; myths and legends, pattern making and children's books, for this lively series.

'All these places have helped to shape me, yet the transient nature of my childhood has also resulted in feelings of displacement. The characters in the works are personifications of natural elements and have become my own personal deities.'

Large Gallery: UNFOLD: works from paper
fortyfivedownstairs 10th Anniversary Group Show
24 April – 5 May

Ten artists in a fascinating demonstration of just what can be done with a common yet versatile medium - paper. Animated, crushed, folded, torn, twisted, cut, punctured, burnt and stitched, the possibilities continue to UNFOLD. Curated by our own Sally McKittrick and celebrating ten years in the gallery for fortyfivedownstairs the exhibition includes several artists (and one musician) who have presented work here previously and welcomes those who are showing here for the first time.

Supported by K.W. Doggett & Co.

Theatre: Far Away
SaySIX Theatre & lil'artistes
25 April - 13 May

Opening on 25 April the Melbourne premiere of this play by Caryl Churchill, who's been described by American writer Tony Kushner as "the greatest English living playwright". First produced at London's Royal Court Theatre, like much of Churchill's work, this is an extraordinarily powerful play and we are very pleased that it will finally be seen in Melbourne.
