Earlier this year we went searching for Western Australia's hottest playwrights who were asked to write a monologue with an expected performance duration of 8 to 15 minutes and were encouraged to be as creative, entertaining, funny or dramatic as they liked with their interpretation of the theme "SUBURBAN MAYHEM". During the five night performance season running Tuesday 16 to Saturday 20 June, 2009. Perth's leading actors will perform ALL final eight monologues as chosen by our panel of judges.

On the final evening of the season the winner of the judges' choice will be announced and a first prize of $3000 awarded. Each night of the season audience members will have a chance to vote for his/her favourite monologue. The Hawaiian Peoples' Choice Award of $1000 will be presented to the author of the monologue which has been voted most popular choice of all The Audiences who have attended the shows.

Now in its fourth year the Maj Monologues Competition is considered a significant competition for up - and - coming writers and playwrights. The panel of judges for 2009 are Jenny McNae, Alison Van Reeken,
John Milson, Sophia Hall and Lis Hoffman. Lis was also a finalist in the first ever Maj Monologues Competition and is directing this year's Maj Monologues Finals season. Their respected theatre credentials represent the highest levels in the theatre disciplines of acting, writing, directing and production.

Last year's Maj Monologues Competition based on the theme of "Love and other Catastrophes", received an unprecented 257 entries with the Judges' Choice won by Lis Hoffman for her monologue titled Sex in the Dead of Winter. The Hawaiian People's Choice Prize was won by Rebecca D'Souza for Debbie Does Dating.

Belinda Dunbar Executive Producer of The Brainbox Project said "It was encouraging to see that there was a life for the monologues after the successful season last year which has always been one of the competition's aims." Finalist Gita Bezard's monologue The Many Secret Thoughts of Oscar was expanded into the play Oscar produced at The Rechabites' Hall, Northbridge and Lis Hoffman's monologue went on to be part of a double bill season for Pocket Theatre and was shortlisted for 2008 Short and Sweet Sydney Play Festival.
