SandGate Theatre's FLIPSIDE will run from May 7th-May 22nd at the Sandgate Town Hall.
FLIPSIDE is the true story of the men who survived 119 days in an upturned boat adrift in the Pacific. FLIPSIDE is a dramatic commentary of the men who sailed on the Rose Noelle when they attempted to travel from New Zealand to Tonga. It's funny, heart warming and at the same time sincere and truthful. It's the story of what occurred on the trip after their boat tipped over. Originally from the book "Capsized," written by crewmember Jim Nalepka (as interviewed by Oprah afterwards), Duncum's stage play shows a close up to the ordeals each man faced. Two of the crew hadn't sailed before and were completely unaware of the dangers ahead of them.Captain John Glennie who had sailed across the Pacific some years earlier owned the boat and had both designed and built it, but he had overlooked a few important considerations. Rick Hellreigel was partially crippled with cancer but had met Jim at Anakiwa - a boys' Outward Bound School in NZ. Phillip Hoffman was not a sailor but agreed to crew with John Glennie and learned the hard way how tough things could get. It is a great story of courage, fortitude and presence of mind with realistic humour and should not be missed.
