In what promises to be the concert event of 2019, EPIC launches Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier's tenth album, The Words of Men and pairs it with their first album, the 1993 ARIA Award winning and Gold selling record, Bitch Epic.
2019 is a landmark year for this iconic Australian music duo with the release of The Words of Men on 15 February 2019 and the 25th anniversary of their hit album and first musical collaboration, Bitch Epic.
Conway and Zygier and their band will celebrate the new alongside the much loved, performing The Words of Men and Bitch Epic in their entirety on their national concert tour, aptly titled EPIC, which hits Queensland Performing Arts Centre's (QPAC) Cremorne Theatre stage on Friday 21 June and Saturday 22 June 2019.
Deborah Conway met Willy Zygier in October 1991 when she needed a guitarist to tour her debut solo album String of Pearls. They began a personal and professional relationship that has flourished for the last 28 years producing ten albums and three daughters.
The highly successful Bitch Epic reached number 18 on the Australian Aria charts after its release in November 1993 with the compelling collection of songs spawning a number of radio hits including Today I Am A Daisy, Consider This and the first single, Alive & Brilliant.
Alive & Brilliant was the first time a 5/4 time signature song had breached the charts for a decade or so and in 2016 the Australian National Film & Sound Archive inducted the song into its collection for the song's unique qualities.
Recorded live to capture the vitality and beauty of the chemistry Deborah and Willy share with their band, The Words of Men reflects one of the most creative bursts in their renowned 28-year collaboration, traversing a wide range of themes against the backdrop of the strange circumstances we find ourselves in as the 21st century progresses.
"We have very human concerns and we wanted to make a record that sounds human, with creaks and breaths and joy and passion," says Deborah.
"A serious record made with fun or a fun record made seriously... Sometimes a very spare arrangement with the tiniest bit of flesh to cover the barest bones of a tune, other times a veritable pile on, an acoustic maelstrom of joyous chaos brought to order by our collective spirit.
"This last year has been one of the most productive we've ever had, I'm not sure what to attribute this to; I can say it was deeply satisfying to be so consumed and so intensely focused on the work. We pushed each other to our limits; this is the best thing one can do for your writing partner, never allow anything substandard to get by. Reject their best efforts they've been sweating over for hours if you don't think it's good enough. They will thank you in the end!"
EPIC provides an opportunity for Conway and Zygier to introduce audiences to this new and remarkable collection of songs and to revisit their highest charting and ARIA Award winning album.
