Live Performance Australia announced today that Australian cabaret star David Campbell will host the 2010 Helpmann Awards ceremony at the Sydney Opera House on Monday 6 September.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on the new subscription arts channel STVDIO for the first time, going out to viewers around the country on FOXTEL and AUSTAR. It will air at 8.30pm AEST on Monday 6 September in a two-hour special and is the first live broadcast on STVDIO, which premiered in April this year.

David Campbell helped launch STVDIO with the world premiere of his documentary David Campbell on Broadway. David is also Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and it is fortuitous that this year's Helpmann Awards have a new award category, recognising excellence in Cabaret Performance in Australia. This year is his first time as host of the Helpmann Awards.

David Campbell said "I am thrilled to be hosting the Helpmann Awards which are hugely important within the performing arts industry. It is also exciting that FOXTEL, long time supporter of the Awards, will broadcast the Awards on STVDIO."

This year will be the 10th presentation of the Helpmann Awards: the pinnacle industry event for Australia's live performance industry, which attracts more than 15.5 million people to shows across the nation with revenues of more than $A1 billion.

Nominees for the 2010 Awards and recipients of the prestigious JC Williamson AwardTM will be announced at a media launch held simultaneously in Melbourne and Sydney on Monday, 2 August.

The Helpmann Awards will be broadcast live and exclusive on STVDIO, channel 132 on FOXTEL.

David Campbell got his start in the 1990s at the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Theatre Company. In 2000 he provided the singing voice for the character Joseph in Dreamworks' animated film Joseph: King of Dreams. In 2001, David Campbell took the major starring role in the Australian musical "Shout!", the story of 'The Wild One' - rocker Johnny O'Keefe. This production became a cultural phenomenon in Australia, and made Campbell a household name. Since becoming a successful recording artist, he has continued to make occasional stage appearances in Australia, in musicals such as Carousel, Sunset Boulevard, and Company. Campbell's recordings include The Swing Sessions, an album produced by Chong Limcovering 13 classic swing tracks such as "Mack the Knife", "Call Me Irresponsible", "Mr Bojangles", and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and The Swing Sessions 2.
