The Sydney Theatre Awards are run by a group of theatre critics to celebrate the strength, quality and diversity of theatre in Sydney. The Sydney Theatre Reviewers consist of Jason Blake (Sydney Morning Herald), Deborah Jones (The Australian), Alex Lalak (Daily Telegraph), Jo Litson (The Sunday Telegraph), John McCallum (The Australian), Diana Simmonds (Stagenoise) and John Shand (Sydney Morning Herald).

Diana Simmonds, co-founder of the Sydney Theatre Reviewers and Stagenoise.com, said "Ever since we rebirthed credible awards for the theatre makers of Sydney we've wondered what each successive year would bring. We've always hoped for the best and each year we have been thrilled, surprised and proud of the work we have witnessed in theatres of all sizes across the city. We are privileged to live in interesting times and the 2009 nominees prove that there is more than one way to interpret the Chinese proverb. Right across the spectrum we see wonderful work, great actors, creative imaginations and extraordinary value for money. The live experience - you and the actor - is priceless and yet again Sydney proves to be a treasure chest."
