BWW Reviews: HELPMANN AWARDS 2015 NOMINATIONS Announced Across Australia

Tonight, the countdown to the 2015 HELPMANN AWARDS began with the announcement of the 2015 HELPMANN AWARDS Nominees. The 2015 Nominees were announced simultaneously at events in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart and Perth. Helpmann Awards Administration Committee member and Executive Producer Jon Nicholls opened the Sydney announcement at the Richard Wherrett Studio at the Rosyln Packer Theatre, Walsh Bay. Musical Theatre favourite Helen Dallimore played MC and was assisted by LES MISERABLES cast members Simon Gleeson, Hayden Tee, Patrice Tipoki, Trevor Ashely and Opera Australia's Taryn Fiebig in announcing the Nominees. There were 738 eligible entries for the 2015 nominations in 44 categories in comparison to the 100 entries in 21 categories when the awards were established in 2001.

The presentation included the announcement of the Best Special Event Award for 2015 being awarded to Perth International Arts Festival, in association with Royal De Luxe for THE INCREDIBLE AND PHENOMENAL JOURNEY OF THE GIANTS TO THE STREETS OF PERTH. The three day event as part of the Perth International Arts Festival drew over 1 million people to view the spectacle. Locals and visitors saw the giant sized Diver and Girl marionettes take to the streets of Perth, sleeping, washing, exploring and eventually reuniting on the waterfront before departing the city via barge down the Swan River.

The 2015 JC Williamson Award will also be presented to Paul Kelly at the ceremony in July. The JC Williamson Award recognises individuals that have "made a truly outstanding contribution to the enrichment of the Australian liver entertainment and performing arts culture and shaped the future of the industry for the better". Kelly, as a performer and songwriter has over 20 recorded studio albums, several film soundtracks, two live albums and a critically acclaimed memoir.

The 2015 Sue Nattrass Award will be presented to Eric Robinson, CEO of JPJ Audio and Jands Production Services (JPS). The Sue Nattrass Award honours "exceptional service to the Australian live performance industry shining a spotlight on people in service roles in a field which may not enjoy a high public profile." Mr Robinson has held the position of CEO of JPJ Audio and Jands Production Services since 1970 and has extensive experience in sound reinforcement, lighting, rigging, large screen projection and special effects and has been involved with major music events, festivals, and theatre works.

The Brian Stacey Award for Emerging Australian Conductors has been awarded to Jessica Gethin. Gethin started as a Conducting Intern with Western Australia Youth Orchestra and has garnered praised for her "dynamic energy, outstanding musicianship and abounding presence on the podium".

The Awards winners will be announced on Monday 27th July 2015, 7:30pm at Capitol Theatre, Sydney. Utilising the set of LES MISERABLES, currently showing at the Capitol Theatre, the 2015 HELPMANN AWARDS will be hosted by previous HELPMANN AWARD Winner, Todd McKenney and will include an opening performance from the cast of LES MISERABLES along with performances from ONCE, ANYTHING GOES, THE AUSTRALIAN PIANO QUARTET, COSENTINO - THE GRAND ILLUSIONIST and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES.

The Helpmann Awards are Australia's version of Broadway's Tony Awards and London's Olivier Awards. The annual awards recognise achievement in live performance including musical theatre, contemporary music, comedy, cabaret, opera, classical music, theatre, dance and physical theatre. The awards were established in 2001 by Live Performance Australia to honour the memory and achievements of Sir Robert Helpmann. They promote, celebrate and recognise the live performance industry.

Sir Robert Helpmann (1909-1986), from Mount Gambier South Australia, is best known for his contribution to ballet as a dancer, choreographer and director was a stage film and television actor, a director of plays and operas and a singer. His choreography lives on through movies such as the 1948 THE RED SHOES and THE TALES OF HOFFMANN (1953). He held the position of Artistic Director at the Duchess Theatre, Artistic Director of the Australian Ballet for 11 years between 1965 and 1976 and Director of the Adelaide Festival of Arts from 1970-1976 amongst many other roles. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1964, Australian of the Year in 1966 and received his knighthood in 1968.
