Theatre: Do not go gentle...
By Patricia Cornelius
Directed by Julian Meyrick
Performances are booked out until Sunday 15 August. Thursday 19 and Sunday 22 are also booked out, while tickets for the remaining nights are selling really fast. There is no possibility of extension (sadly) so theatre lovers should book very soon...we really hate saying no. The play will end its run on Sunday, 29 August 2010. For more details about the play, and reviews, please go to our website www.fortyfivedownstairs.com.
Tickets range from $37.50-$45. Book online at www.fortyfivesownstairs.com or call (03) 9662 9966.
Gallery: Unrepresented
Nicholas Jones, Christopher Koller, Ted McKinlay, Chloe Vallance and Ben V Walsh.
Until 14 August
An exhibition curated by arts consultant Bernadette Alibrando showcases five artists who have chosen not to be represented by commercial galleries. They each have strongly individual styles and backgrounds. Photographer Christopher Koller has a long exhibition history in Australia and overseas, while the youngest member of the group Chloe Vallance, graduated last year with first class honours from RMIT.
Sculptor Nicholas Jones creates layers of meaning, sculpting disused books - Hokusai's wave emerges from "The Old Man and The Sea" for example. Ted McKinlay's lyrical pastel drawings have a dreamlike quality, drawing on images from memory, appropriated imagery and found media. The fifth member of the group is Ben Walsh whose magical pictures are made using virtual sculpting, and painting textures.
Gallery: X-Field
Charles Anderson, Richard Black, Mel Dodd, Sand Helsel, Andrea Mina and SueAnne Ware.
18 - 28 August
Imagine an exhibition combining art, architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism - can't? Then come to see X-Field, a collaborative group combining all these disciplines in their exhibition.
Playreading: I take your hand in mine
Monday 23 August
Those who attended director Ariette Taylor's production of Ivanov, by Chekov, will welcome her return to fortyfivedownstairs with two favourite performers Stewart Morritt and Anastasia Malinoff. They will be reading I take your hand in mine by Carol Rocamora, based on the love letters between Chekov and his wife, the actress Olga Knipper.
Classical Music: TriStan LeeThis is one for music lovers; the outstanding young pianist TriStan Lee gave a memorable recital here just before he left Australia to study in the U.K. in 2009. He is back here for a brief visit, having won even more awards, and will be playing another spectacular programme, including Liszt, Rachmaninoff and contemporary British composer, James Macmillan.
Theatre: Bare Witness
By Mari Lourey
Directed by Nadja Kostich
Opening September 10, Bare Witness by Mari Lourey draws on the real life experiences of photo journalists and foreign correspondents in the Balkans, East Timor and Iraq, roles which have become increasingly dangerous, while their moral validity is increasingly questioned.
Another stellar cast features in this production, including Daniela Farinacci, Todd Macdonald and Maria Theodorakis - while the director, Nadja Kostich has a wonderful track record including The Grand Feeling which was an early and very moving production at fortyfivedownstairs.
