Red Line Productions at the Old Fitz Theatre is pleased to be partnering with the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras again to present the Australian Premiere of The Whale by Samuel D. Hunter.

On the outskirts of Mormon Country, Idaho, a six hundred pound gay recluse hides away in his apartment and slowly eats himself to death. Desperate to reconnect with his long-estranged daughter, he reaches out to her only to find a viciously sharp-tongued and wildly unhappy teen. Big-hearted and fiercely funny, The Whale tells the story of a man's last chance at redemption and of finding beauty in the most unexpected places.

Director Shane Anthony (Songs for the Fallen) has complied an impressive cast including Keith Agius (Henry V, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead), Chloe Bayliss (The Good Doctor, Charitable Intent), Alex Beauman (On the Shore of the Wide World), Meredith Penman (Boys Will Be Boys, Blood Bank) and Hannah Waterman (Eastenders, Love Letters).

Having won the 2013 Drama Desk Award and the 2013 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, The Whale has solidified Samuel D. Hunter as one of Broadway's most promising young playwrights. Hunter first drew attention for A Bright New Boise that won him a 2011 Obie Award for Playwriting.

"beautifully devastating drama... frequently very funny" - Chicago Tribune
"[The Whale] finds bleak humor in the saddest, most painful situations" - Variety
"distinctive and intriguingly complicated - with easygoing humanity and grace" - The New York Times
