Arts Projects Australia have today announced Grammy Award winning, Brooklyn-based singer, composer and producer, Arooj Aftab’s Vulture Prince Australian Tour – for the artist’s first time in Australia – bringing her mesmerising live-performance experience to Sydney City Recital Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre and WOMADelaide, from 6 to 11 to March 2024. Â
Emerging in the last few years as one of the most innovative composers and vocalists of our time, Aftab is a true visionary, whose architectural compositions draw on a deep well of musical influences – blending jazz, folk, minimalism, electronic and poetry. Â
In 2021, Aftab’s breakthrough album Vulture Prince was met with universal critical acclaim – bringing both her voice and music a lot of attention, including a Grammy for Best Global Music Performance, and President Barack Obama including her single Mohabbat on his official 2021 Summer Playlist. Â
Aftab’s spellbinding and visual performance style has earned her a place on the New York Times’ best concerts list, and appearances at Coachella, Primavera Sound and Glastonbury.Â
Born in Saudi Arabia, Aftab moved with her parents to their native Pakistan when she was 10-years-old – later finding inspiration for her music in Lahore's lush gardens, intricate architecture and Urdu poetry.Â
With an early interest in music, Aftab taught herself how to play the guitar, and was inspired by a range of singers from Begum Akhtar to Billie Holiday. By the time she was 18, Aftab was well known in the Pakistani indie music scene, and soon became an internet sensation when her cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah went viral.Â
Â
Later moving to the US to study at Berklee College of Music, Boston, she is now part of New York City’s vibrant jazz and experimental music scene.Â
