The first North American touring production of The Color Purple is currently underway at Austin's University of Texas Bass Concert Hall.

Based on the Alice Walker book and Steven Spielberg movie of the same name, The Color Purple: The Musical (produced by Oprah Winfrey) is a moving and emotionally uplifting story about love and life.  Through the love and support of friends and faith, Celie learns to triumph over the seemingly unending adversity in her life.

In the role of Celie, Kenita R. Miller packs a surprisingly big voice inside a petite package.  Her vocals were, by far, the best of the production.  This is not, however, to say that the rest of the cast was vocally weak - quite the opposite, in fact.  There was not one weak voice in the cast.  Many of the actors, including those in the ensemble, were given ample time to showcase their voices with extended solos.  Particularly noteworthy is Doug Escew when in the role of the Preacher in the opening number, "Mysterious Ways."

The scene stealer (in the best way) of the production is Felicia P. Fields's "Sophia," the sturdy, doesn't take b.s. from anybody owner of Celie's step-son Harpo's heart.  She provided immense comic relief, and was also a vital source of Celie's strength.  Fields earned a Tony Award nomination for her portrayal of Sophie in the original Broadway production.

Finally, in a small but vital role as Celie's sister, Nettie, former American Idol contestant LaToya London shines, and she is a wonderful vocal complement to Miller.

I definitely recommend this show to all audiences (ages 7+), whether or not you've read the book or seen the movie.  The Color Purple is playing at Bass Concert Hall through January 17.  Tickets are available at the box office, by phone at (512) 477-6060, or at Broadway Across America.
