Soubrette Productions presents Assassins by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman at the Carver Center's Boyd Vance Theatre. With an all-star cast of local actors including Nathan Brockett, Andrew Cannata, and Julia Lorenz-Olson, Soubrette is a community theatre run by a husband and wife team. Directed by Philip Olson who also serves as Artistic Director for Soubrette, Assassins is under the musical direction of Adam Roberts, costumed by Stephanie Dunbar, with set design by Ia Ensterä.
As Americans, we've been told we've got the right to be happy, that we have the right to our dreams. What happens, though, when that doesn't happen? Who is to blame? Who can be held responsible? How do we reconcile the limitless possibility of the American Dream with the absolutely limited realities of America? Assassins imagines a group of men and women who answered these questions the same way: by trying to shoot the President of the United States.
Soubrette wants to make sure Assassins reaches as many people in the community as possible, and as a result, tickets are only $25 with discounts for students. In addition, for some Austin Community College students, tickets will be completely free as Soubrette is partnering with classes in the history and theatre departments at ACC: visiting classrooms to discuss the material and themes of Assassins, as well as the experience of working on the show. Time in a theatre can be transformative, and Soubrette wants students to have that opportunity.
Soubrette has launched a Kickstarter Campaign to help fund their project, and their belief that theatre should be both affordable to the public and financially responsible to the performers and design team. With a goal of $10,000 Soubrette is halfway there with 13 days left to go!
Showtimes are today, April 3-20, Thursday-Sundays at 8pm. For tickets to Assassins, visit http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/606345. For more information, visit soubretteproductions.com.
