ALL MY SONS, Arthur Miller's American Classic Comes to City Theatre Austin This May

Coming in May, City Theatre Austin proudly presents the critically-acclaimed stage drama All My Sons, Arthur Miller's masterpiece about one man search for the American dream - and the ultimate destruction in his pursuit. This gripping portrait of a life and family won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and Antoinette Perry Award when it first opened in 1947 and, with its relevance, is still being produced in theatres today. It plays May 11 - June 3 and is directed by City Theatre guest director Tracy Arnold.

How far would a man go to protect his family from the past? Arthur Miller's award-winning stage classic tells the story of patriarch Joe Keller, desperately wanting to secure the financial security of his family and the legacy he spent so many years building. But the dark shadows of his business, those hurt and punished, and the hopeful arrival of a son who may not return from fighting abroad, create a post-war American family in a tragic downfall of lies, greed, love, and loss. This gripping and emotional story demands its audience examine the definition of social and personal responsibility, and the distance we may travel in search of the American dream.

Arthur Miller remains one of the leading American Playwrights of the twentieth century. He was born October 1915 in New York City, the son of a woman's clothing manufacturer, who was ruined during the economic collapse of the 1930s. Living through young adulthood, Miller was shaped by the poverty that surrounded him. The Depression demonstrated to the playwright the vulnerability of human existence in the modern era. Miller's first play to make it to Broadway, The Man Who Had All the Luck (1944), was a dismal failure, closing after only four performances. This early setback almost discouraged him from writing at all, but, luckily for American theater, he gave himself one more try. In 1947, three years later, All My Sons won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, launching Miller into theatrical stardom. The drama centering on a man's family, and his moral crisis in society, is at the core of all of Miller's plays, but nowhere is it more prominent than in Death of a Salesman, which secured his reputation as one of the nation's foremost playwrights. His sense of social consciousness continued giving us more great dramas including The Crucible (1953) and A View from the Bridge (1955). His extensive list of works spans the last seven decades and include plays, screenplays, novels, and essays. Some of his other notable plays include Incident at Vichy (1964), The Price (1968), The Ride Down Mount Morgan (1991), Broken Glass (1994), Resurrection Blues (2002) and Broadway and London West End revivals of All My Sons in 2008 and 2010.

City Theatre is excited to welcome back guest director Tracy Arnold. She serves as Artistic Director of the Wimberley Players and has led the City Theatre productions of Bus Stop and the Austin premiere of The Graduate. The show features the talented cast of Rick Smith, Tracy Hurd, Sean Gordon, Christina Little -Manley, Beau Paul, Phillip Smith, Ty Wylie, Marett Hanes, Katrin Otterness, and Joe Colaleo. The City Theatre Company is excited to be celebrating its 12th anniversary season of live theatre entertainment in Austin. CTC is an Austin-based, not-for-profit arts organization and is sponsored in part by the Austin Creative Alliance and the Austin Cultural Arts Division.
