The Tony® and Grammy®-Award-Winning musical, WICKED, which played from September 14-October 9 at the Fox Theatre shattered a box office record during its Atlanta engagement. For the week ending October 9, the musical grossed $2,438,947 over eight performances, making it the highest-grossing week for a touring Broadway show in North American history. The engagement was a special to the Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta 2011-12 season. The previous North American record, also held by WICKED, was an eight-show gross of $2,400,489 during the week ending July 11, 2010 at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, MO.
"Not only is WICKED the highest grossing theatrical production that Broadway in Atlanta has presented, but it also continues to break its own sales records which speaks to the phenomenon of the show" said Russ Belin, vice president of Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta, part of the Broadway Across America network. "We are elated to have contributed to this record-breaking run in Atlanta. Audiences embraced WICKED with as much enthusiasm during this engagement, the third in Atlanta, as during its first stop in the city in 2006. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to all our patrons who supported this wonderful production and to the talented cast and company of the tour."
"Live theater is a real driver of tourism. A blockbuster show like WICKED draws from a regional market. Those who travel into Atlanta and spend the weekend stay in local hotels, dine out in area restaurants and park their cars in nearby lots," stated Kevin Langston, deputy commissioner for Tourism for the Georgia Department of Economic Development. "Studies from Mandala Research show that the average cultural and heritage traveler spends $994 per trip. The economic impact from this record-breaking 4-week run of WICKED is tremendous."
Upcoming shows in the Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta 2011-12 season include: MAMMA MIA! (November 2-6), DR. SUESS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS (November 29-December 4), MEMPHIS (January 31-February 5), BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL (March 13-18, 2012), LES MISÉRABLES (April 24-29, 2012) and JERSEY BOYS (May 22-June 10).
