Out of Box's upcoming shows The Velocity of Autumn, running March 3-18, and Assassins, running March 31 through April 15, use humor to convey deeper messages, but will see a complete transformation of their space and stage. It's all part of the Out of Box experience.
In The Velocity of Autumn, 80-year-old artist Alexandra (Dianne Butler) has barricaded herself into her second-floor apartment with enough Molotov cocktails to blow up the whole building. Her adult children, desperate to convince her to make a move into assisted living, send in their secret weapon and unexpected mediator: Alexandra's estranged youngest son (John Stanier). With light humor and wit, Eric Coble's play explores the complexity of relationships and the fragility and ferocity of life. Directed by Carolyn S. Choe, The Velocity of Autumn is wickedly funny and wonderfully touching.
With a transformation of the intimate blackbox theatre, Out of Box will present Assassins in the round as an immersive musical experience. Assassins, the controversial musical by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman, is a multiple Tony Award-winning tour-de-force that explores a twisted American dream. In a murderous carnival game, nine assassins attempt to change the world by assassinating the President of the United States. As history tells us, some were more successful than others. This historical "revusical" approaches the dark side of the American experience with humor and smart lyrics, combining the literal circus with the political circus in director MiChelle Davis' gritty big-top vision.
