April 8 through May 1, 2016, Synchronicity Theatre will tackle justice and race in the world premiere of Lee Nowell's Beyond Reasonable Doubt: The Troy Davis Project.
The play, based on trial transcripts, legal documents, photographs, letters, interviews, blog posts, and published articles about the 2011 execution of Troy Davis for the murder of police officer Mark MacPhail, explores the conflicting beliefs surrounding the case, and sheds light on racial justice and capital punishment.
The play is not a biography. Instead, through the perspectives of fictional and non-fictional characters, Ms. Nowell dissects and considers many experiences in the days leading up to the execution of Troy Davis.
The structure of the play is similar to investigative journalism. Directly conflicting opinions are presented equally, leaving audiences to question which version of the truth they actually believe.
Projections of trial transcripts, legal briefs and materials from the actual case will appear onstage, so the audience has points of reference.
The two acts are played in alternating order each night - half of the performances begin with Act One and half with Act Two. Act One brings forth evidence pointing to Tory Davis' guilt, and Act Two brings forth evidence pointing to his innocence.
There will be a discussion following each performance. To purchase tickets, or for more information, please visit synchrotheatre.com.
