For 27 years, Ivan the Gorilla has lived in a cage at the Big Top Mall, content to paint pictures and people-watch. Then Ivan meets Ruby, a captured baby elephant who's been separated from her family. Determined to protect his new friend, Ivan uses his creativity to find a new home and become the mighty silverback he was always meant to be.
The production design will look like a European circus-style mall. The animals will come alive through a combination of modern movement, head-pieces, masks, costumes, and puppetry. The play will be told from Ivan's point of view, and the audience will get a glance at a gorilla's imagination through shadow puppetry work.
The One and Only Ivan is directed by Julie Skrzypek, and will feature movement and choreography by Sandra Hughes. Scenic, Prop and Puppet Design are by Michael Hickey. The cast includes Atlanta-based actors Renita James as Julia, Chris Hecke as Ivan, Benjamin Sims as George, Jeffrey Sneed as Mack/Bob, and Precious West as Stella. The cast members will also assume multiple roles based on beloved characters from the book.
Show times for The One and Only Ivan are Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. All performances will be at Synchronicity Theatre in Midtown Atlanta's Peachtree Pointe complex. Single ticket prices range from $20-22 for adults and $15-16 for children and are available online at www.synchrotheatre.com.
New to the Family Series this season is PJs & Play. Every Friday at 7 p.m., kids are invited to wear pajamas and enjoy milk and cookies while watching the show.
