Tony Wendice has married his wife, Margot, for her money and now plans to murder her for the same reason. After arranging the "perfect murder," he blackmails a scoundrel he used to know into strangling her, and designs a brilliant alibi for himself. After a terrifying twist of fate, a suspenseful Hitchcockian game of cat and mouse convenes until an inspector from Scotland Yard and the young man in love with the wife discover the truth.

Along comes a mysterious young man whose animal vitality seriously upsets the entire group. Choices, temptations, and sacrifices lead to the prevailing message of "Picnic" that youth is a precious gift that must be savored instead of squandered.
