Sprinkle Tinkerbell's fairy dust and prepare to fly away; it's off to Neverland for a vibrant puppet play! Soaring back on stage after its 2012 debut, the Center for Puppetry Arts presents an inventive adaptation of the time-honored classic Peter Pan, playing September 22-October 25. Celebrating the carefree spirit of childhood, Peter Pan chronicles the journey of amateur inventor Wendy Darling and her brothers as they romp with Peter, Tinkerbell and the Lost Boys, rescue Princess Tiger Lily and battle the nefarious Captain Hook and his band of bumbling sailors.
Based on the beloved book by J.M. Barrie, the Center's lively version has a modern, puppet twist! Using blacklight puppetry techniques, the puppets and scenery are vibrant, bold and glow with colorful life. Puppeteers disappear into the background and the use of animations projected on a screen brings the children's world to life in a magical and fun way. Princess Tiger Lily of the Neverland tribe speaks authentic Cherokee; the Center worked with the Cherokee Nation Education Services and their Translation Department to translate Tiger Lily's dialogue into this beautiful language for the show.
Adapted by Michael Haverty and directed by Amy Sweeney, Peter Pan is performed by puppeteers Ashley Anderson, Matt Baum, Luis R. Hernandez, Lindsay Ricketson and Timothy Whitson. Original music, featuring an array of instruments including toy piano, accordion, saxophone and cello, was composed by Jeffrey Bützer. The puppets were designed by the Center's resident puppet builder Jason Hines and all props, puppets and scenery were created onsite by the Center's talented staff.
Recommended for ages 4 and up, Peter Pan is presented in the Mainstage Theater September 22 -October 25. Guests can enjoy discount preview days on Tuesday, September 22 and Wednesday, September 23.
