An intimate Marietta theatre, Out of Box continues its commitment to producing original works by calling for submissions of new plays. The strong desire to produce original works and promote playwrights comes from the personal relationships that our staff members hold with the local writing and art community, a resource that we seek to utilize more often.

Since the theatre's conception, Out of Box has focused on producing plays that are creative and innovative in sometimes surprising ways. Out of Box has hosted and produced several original works by local playwrights, including the hard-hitting prison drama Mama Bear by Sharon Harris Warrick, Scorned and Touched by Raymond Fast, Playing in the Dark: A collection of short plays by various local playwrights, award-winning Trash Day by Dave Lauby, and the annual comedy sketch show Santa After Hours.

Many of these shows are selected as a perfect fit for the intimate space of Out of Box because they touch on grittier themes or come from off-beat ideas. "One of my favorite things about working for Out of Box is that there are places that other theatres can't go, or there are themes that won't resonate with their audiences. Here at Out of Box, we're not afraid to go there. We can produce shows that are brilliantly written, but perhaps don't get as much time on the stage," said Marketing Director Laurel Lowe.

Up next for Out of Box is the world premiere of local musician, poet, and author Sara Crawford's The Spins, playing January 22-31, 2016. The Spins was a finalist in the 2011 Playwriting Contest from The Essential Theatre and is directed by A. Julian Verner.

Additionally, Out of Box is accepting submissions of plays for staged readings during the 2016-2017 season, which will include a following talkback with the playwright. This new program will help promote new playwrights, and help our artistic community to grow.
