Newnan Theatre Company to Hold Auditions for FLIES AT THE WELL

Announcing auditions for "Flies at the Well: The Trial of the Killer John Wallace", the world premiere of a new play by W. Jeff Bishop, based on the historic events of 1948­50 in West Central Georgia. Produced by Newnan Theatre Company.

Those auditioning are requested to bring a current headshot, resume of experience, and prepare a vocal selection, preferably a traditional hymn, gospel, or bluegrass style, and a one­ to two-­minute dramatic monologue pulled from southern literature or drama.

Auditions will take place by appointment on: Saturday, January 16 and Saturday, January 23 from 12pm to 5pm Sunday, January 17 and Sunday, January 24 from 2pm to 6pm

Performance dates are April 1, 2, and 3, 2016 at the Wadsworth Auditorium in Newnan. Rehearsals begin February 1, in Newnan.

Character Breakdown:

All named characters are based on real people or an amalgam of several people involved in this event. The Jury/Choir is a diverse group serving as Greek Chorus, sound effects, and auxiliary percussion.

John Wallace ­ Wealthy, white, southern landowner, 40­60. Respected and feared by all who know him. Very large presence in life and on stage. Bald in real life.

Wilson Turner ­ White sharecropper for John Wallace, moonshiner, 25­30. Lanky, musically inclined, a bit reckless, a bit lazy. Dead.

Robert Lee Gates ­ Black sharecropper for John Wallace, lanky, 25­35

Albert Brooks ­ Black sharecropper for John Wallace, 25­35, fatherly, able to deliver a fiery sermon.

Lamar Potts ­ White, Sheriff of Coweta County, 40­55. Laid back, but serious about his job.

Mayhayley Lancaster ­ White female, Psychic ­ 30­50, wild in appearance and speech. Claims to have counseled John Wallace and had visions of where the body is buried.

Romulus Riley ­ Young black rapscallion, 8­12. Smart, clever, assists Mayhayley at times.

Margaret Ann Sibley ­ Young, white female newspaper reporter, 25­30. Eager to break a real story.
