Anyone who grew up around Atlanta, and more directly, around Ted Turner's Superstation 17, knows who The Addams Family is. Newnan Theatre Company will be welcoming Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, and the whole creepy, kooky family to their Mainstage for the Halloween season. The Addams Family: A New Musical opens Thursday, October 20th.
Director AnDrew Miller was excited to head up the production. "I bought a book of Charles Addams' cartoons when I was 13, and I have been hooked on the quirky humor ever since. If it weren't for Charles Addams, people like Gary Larsen and his "The Far Side" would have never happened." Addams first did his one-frame cartoons featuring a family who was "a little different" from other families for The New Yorker magazine. From there, the following grew to a point that TV producer David Levy decided to make a television series from the cartoons.
This time out, Wednesday Addams, the ultimate "princess of darkness," has grown up and fallen madly in love - with a regular, normal, smart young man from a respectable family. In short, everything her family finds repulsive. When she decides it is time her family meet this wonderful man, the two families try their best to overlook the others' idiosyncrasies. But some things are more difficult to overlook than others.
Christie Lamb and McKel Terry play Wednesday and her intended, Mal Beineke. Gomez and Morticia Addams are played by Grant Vickery and Rachel Wise. Chaz Ferguson portrays the off-kilter Uncle Fester, and Louisa Grant is GrandMama Addams. "Usually, when casting a musical, you get a bit panicky about how voices will blend together onstage," says Miller, "but these remarkable people were almost made to be on stage together." Musical Director Tammy Kimbell agrees with Miller. "I never expected to enjoy the rehearsal process as much as I have with these folks. They are amazing!"
