You Only Shoot the Ones You Love is a monologue-style play in which Jeff talks mostly about how he inadvertently came to be involved with the great Improvisation institutions of Chicago, particularly The Compass Players, Second City, and The Annoyance Theatre.

Jeffrey is the author of Something Wonderful Right Away: An Oral History of The Second City and the Compass Players. He is also the author of nearly 30 plays. The newest is "Kunstler" about the famous radical attorney. He has also written a couple of musicals, and many TV scripts.

The play is filled with reminiscences about famous folk he knew including: David Shepherd, Mike Nichols, Del Close, Paul Sills, Alan Alda, and Gilda Radner. It's also a bit of a coming-of-age tale of finding his place in the theater community. More broadly, it's about finding a home, an idea that is reminiscent of his forebears finding their way to America, having been forced to leave Russia a century before.

Jeffrey Sweet is also the author of four other exceptional books about playwriting and the theatre with his sixth, What Playwrights Talk About When They Talk About Writing, coming in January.

Anybody who cares about comedy and theater in general and the world of Improvisation in particular needs to see You Only Shoot the Ones You Love.

Sweet will appear at The Basement Theatre, 175 W Wieuca Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30342, on Thursday - 10/27 8:00 PM. Reservations at www.thebasementtheatre.com/#SHOOT or by calling 404/277-3071.
