Two of Georgia's cutting-edge theatre companies have again joined forces to bring new work to the stage. Impact Theatre Atlanta, a resident company of the Academy Theatre, presents the world premiere of How To Be An Immigrant by Gillian Royes, opening August 2nd.

A Jamaican immigrant finds her hard-fought life crumbling when her business fails, and her sons turn against her and the old ways. She must decide whether to fight for what she has established or to return home. Has her life been in vain?

"I am ecstatic about producing a world premier with Impact Theatre and The Academy." says Gillian Royes. "I have been a long time fan of Brenda Porter's work."

Barbara Washington, who stars as Sylvia, says, "I'm so excited to be a part of this production, not only because it is a world premiere, but it is such a wonderful story." Barbara Washington has previously been on the Impact/Academy stage in Going To St. Ives.

"There is not better combination to bring Sylvia's character to life than that of Ms. Porter and Ms. Washington," says Academy Artistic Director Robert Drake. "Both of them have the resolute empathy that this character has to find to in order to meet her challenges. Audiences are in for a treat whenever Ms. Porter and Ms. Washington work together! It's true theater excellence!"

In addition to Barbara Washington, the show also features Jessica Briana Kelly, Jason-Jamal Ligon, Duran Butler, Claudette Alexander-Thomason, Ezell Brown. The Design Team is lead by Juana Harper, and includes Lighting Designer Toni Sterling, Costume Designer Ladisa Banks, Sound Designer Robert Drake, and Stage Manager Efrem Whitaker.

This show is rated PG-13, and not suitable for young audiences due to some adult content.
