Georgia Ensemble Theatre (GET), North Fulton's only professional theatre company, will kick off its 2013-2014 season with a celebration of the music of America's beloved open-hearted troubadour, John Denver, with Almost Heaven, John Denver's America. With songs by John Denver and others, Orchestrations and Vocal Arrangements by Jeff Waxman, Original Concept by Harold Thau, and directed by GET Artistic Director Robert J. Farley, this foot-stomping musical runs September 5-22, 2013, at the Theatre's home, the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, 950 Forrest Street, Roswell, GA. This production is generously sponsored by the The Mimms Company.
Almost Heaven, John Denver's America - Denver's songs make up much of the soundscape of the '60s and '70s with their honesty, passion and love of nature and mankind. Many of his songs, including "Rocky Mountain High," "Sunshine on My Shoulders," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "Calypso" and more are rediscovered and reinvented for the Atlanta audience in this nostalgic and exciting musical.
Director Robert Farley writes of his experience with this production: "Over the months of paving the way to this production I have had the privilege to soar with John Denver's songs, and have realized what a great, great songwriter he was. His music in that last 7-10 years of his life became more immediate, meditative, truthful, and a mythical exploration of his inner world that is more relevant today than ever before. His melodies, stories, and lyrics absolutely soar and hang in the air, then coarse right into the very core of our souls. The things he deeply cared about are brought back to us at this performance with his themes of world peace, our potential to lead a compassionate life and care for others, our fundamental right to clean air and water, and the romanticism, contradictions and value of our relationships with those we know and love."
The Cast: Almost Heaven, John Denver's America features the amazing ensemble of Dolph Amick, Mary Nye Bennett, Christopher Damiano, Scott DePoy and Jeremy Wood. Artistic Director Robert Farley is director of the production, with Scott DePoy as Music Director and Michael Monroe serving as Vocal Director.
