Join the Center for Puppetry Arts on Tuesdays this September for a fun, interactive experience that explores storytelling and puppetry traditions in Africa and celebrates the intersection of geography, history, social studies and the arts.
Discovery Day activities are appropriate for all ages and will be adapted to accommodate the age levels of those in attendance. This program is perfect for senior groups, home school groups, scouts or day cares.
Activities:
From Story to Stage: An interactive storytelling/puppetry experience featuring trickster tales from Africa, where audience members discover playful wisdom as stories unfold.
Puppet Creation Station: Participants will build and perform their own Baobab Tree rod puppet. The Baobab tree is a revered symbol of African life and culture.
Discover Puppetry Cart: Participants will experience the art and magic of African puppetry by becoming a part of a masquerade celebration featuring puppets, music and dance.
Events run Tuesdays, September 1, 8, 15 & 29 (No Discovery Day program on September 22) from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Center for Puppetry Arts, 1404 Spring Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30309. Kermit and friends are getting a new home at the Center for Puppetry Arts! The nation's largest nonprofit dedicated to the art of puppetry is constructing a 7,500 square foot museum expansion. Set to be completed in fall 2015, the museum will feature objects from the Center's extensive global collection and will display the world's most comprehensive collection of Jim Henson's contributions to the world of puppetry. The project also includes a major renovation to existing spaces, including a renovated entryway, expanded research library and many other upgrades that will enhance the overall experience for all visitors to the Center. The Center will continue to present performances, workshops, and films throughout the expansion and renovation process; however museum exhibits are closed until the grand opening of the new museum this fall. Since 1978, the Center has introduced millions of visitors to the wonder and art of puppetry and has touched the lives of many through enchanting performances, curriculum-based workshops, and the hands-on Museum as well as Distance Learning and Outreach programs.
