Known for its annual holiday hit "Black Nativity," Dominion Entertainment Group, LLC (DEG) is bringing a critically acclaimed production to Greater Atlanta this summer. From August 24 - September 3, "A Lesson Before Dying" will run at Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center in Decatur, Georgia.
Based on the American classic novel from Ernest Gaines, Romulus Hinney's play tells the story of an innocent young black man who is condemned to death by electrocution in Louisiana in 1948 for a crime he didn't commit. His godmother solicits the assistance of a schoolteacher to teach him how to die with dignity. The critically acclaimed production makes for an engrossing, moving and, in some ways, devastating experience for the audience.
The stellar cast lineup includes: Enoch King as the main character, Grant Wiggins; Simeon Daise, as Jefferson; Elisabeth Omilami, as Miss Emma Glenn; Lee Buechele, as Sheriff Sam Guidry; Brittany Smith, as Vivian Baptiste; Trevor Goble, as Paul Bonin; and Kerwin Thompson, as Reverend Moses Ambrose. The Atlanta based director David Kote earned a MFA in directing from University of Indiana and has also appeared in the 1999 film "A Lesson Before Dying" as Bear
"I'm excited for another chance for us to bring art to the community. I'm excited for the all-star talented we've pulled together. But, I'm most excited about the opportunity we have to tell such a relevant story," explained Robert John Connor, CEO and artistic director at DEG. "We, as black men, have been and remain under attack. Yet, our dignity is something no one has ever been able to take from us. This story is an inspiring reminder of that."
Since 2012, DEG has developed musicians, playwrights, directors, filmmakers and artisans, helping to bolster the arts in communities that need enrichment and professional development opportunities.
Tickets for "A Lesson Before Dying" are on sale now from $10 for children to $30 for adults. Porter Sanford III Performing Arts & Community Center, a state-of-the-art, 500-seat theater in the historic Candler Road district of Decatur, is proud to be home to the play.
