"I was home-schooled by travelling Christian clowns," says JonCarr, creator of "Black Nerd" in a recent WABE/NPR interview.

"I was always the weird kid that 'talked too white.' But then going to DragonCon with all my nerdy friends, I was always the black kid. I would never quite fit in in whatever group of people that I was spending time with. Getting used to that and embracing that is kind of my journey."

So what happens when a black kid prefers listening to Weird Al over Kendrick Lamar, attending Dragon Con over the Jay-Z Concert, or watching Star Wars over Tyler Perry? Imagine the TV show "Atlanta" meets Dragon Con as this new Dad's Garage show brings you a dark comedy about a young man's journey navigating the expectations of his black family and white friends. When race and geekdom collide you get a "Black Nerd."

This new scripted show, written by Dad's Garage ensemble member Jon Carr, covers both lighthearted and serious issues. First and foremost, the play is a comedy that pays homage to many of Carr's geeky interests like "Star Wars," "Pokemon," and "Saved by the Bell." The story touches on serious issues, such as Carr's experience with police harassment. Throughout the play, Carr asks "What is the Black Experience?" and questions the perception of what African Americans are supposed to be interested in.

"Black Nerd" started off as a series of essays Carr wrote for public performance, including stories written for Atlanta Write Club. Carr was the co-writer of the extremely popular Dad's Garage show "The Wrath of Con," and "Black Nerd" is his first show as a solo-writer. The show is directed by Tiffany Porter, a regular with the Atlanta Shakespeare Company and a founding producer of the Weird Sisters Theatre Project.
