Broadway Actress Terry Burrell Takes On Second Role With Dominion Entertainment In CROWNS Image

After making her debut with Dominion Entertainment (DEG) in the sell-out holiday classic "Black Nativity," actress and singer Terry Burrell is returning to the stage. This summer, Burrell will play the audacious preacher's wife, Mabel, in DEG's production of "Crowns." The gospel musical by Golden Globe winning playwright Regina Taylor will run May 30 - June 10, at the Fulton County Southwest Arts Center Performance Theater & Gallery.

Adapted from the book, "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats," this musical is a celebration of the African-American legacy of pain, pride and survival. Centered on a young girl as the main character, Yolanda, the plot follows her journey down south from Brooklyn after the death of her brother. There, she finds strength in the stories of the town's women and the rituals connected to their hats that they call crowns.

Burrell has gained international acclaim for many of the women characters she has portrayed in shows including "Lady Day At Emerson's Bar & Grill," "Dreamgirls," "Thoroughly Modern Millie," "Three Penny Opera," "Swinging On a Star," "Honky Tonk Nights," and "Showboat." In fact, she premiered her own one-woman piece "ETHEL" as a theatrical tribute to jazz and blues icon Ethel Waters.

"It is always an honor to take on barrier-breaking roles that portray women as the diverse, impactful and unique individuals that we are," Burrell said. "Mabel, is bold and unapologetic, totally opposite of the preacher's wife stereotype. I love her uninhibited and bold approach to life."

Under the direction of Thomas W. Jones II, alongside Burrell will be Tyler Prynce as Yolanda, the main character; Sandra Jones as Mother Shaw, the seasoned and wise matron; Jennifer Myles as Velma, the town mortician; Brittany Inge as Jeannette, the notorious flirt; and Andrea Connor as Wanda, the wholesome teacher. The gifted Eric Moore will take on the various male characters that appear throughout the production.

An internationally accomplished singer and actress, some of Burrell's credits include: "Thoroughly Modern Millie," "Dreamgirls," "Into the Woods," "Eubie," "Swinging on a Star," and "Showboat." She appeared at The Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the Walnut Street Theatre in her one-woman piece, "ETHEL," a theatrical tribute to Ethel Waters. Most recently, she played Billie Holiday in "Lady Day At The Emerson Bar And Grill," and was featured in two one-act plays written by Pearl Cleage. In May, she will appear in the concert version of "Candide at Symphony Hall" for the ALLIANCE THEATRE. Learn more at www.terryburrell.com.
