Beginning this August and running through the school year in segments corresponding with Aurora Theatre's main stage programing, families will find a variety of performances, with more shows than ever before including many exciting new performers as well as returning audience favorites.
School is back in session and so is Aurora Children's Playhouse with three dynamic performances this August. "That Puppet Guy", Lee Bryan, returns to Aurora Children's Playhouse to kick off the season with his hilarious puppet show The Giant, The Beanstalk & Jack. Fee-Fi-Fo-Fun! Based on the timeless tale of a lazy boy named Jack who outwits a Giant to get the gold and save his farm. This innovative mini-musical combines original songs with rod puppets, hand puppets, and shadow puppets all in one show.
"Bryan's a playful mimic, a shameless punster and a silly lyricist who's not afraid to take literary liberties in the name of a good rhyme." - Atlanta Journal-Constitution
On August 18, world renowned tap dancer Tre McClendon makes his Aurora Children's Playhouse debut with an exciting show for children, Tappin' for Tots. Tap dancing has a rich history and has endured for generations as one of the most popular art forms with American roots. Tre McClendon introduces kids to this fun and athletic dance which relies on improvisation that contains complex rhythms and musical expressions along with tales of tap's African American path. Audiences will thrill to Tappin' for Tots and enjoy some of the most phenomenal tap dancing seen in the USA!
Kids love superheroes and on August 25 they will "get to meet a new one live at Aurora Children's Playhouse. Mild-mannered storyteller Barry Stewart Mann has a secret identity, when a problem arises he becomes CultureMan to the Rescue! He boldly travels the globe gathering cultural lore with wise lessons-about hard work, sharing, honesty and more. Hear tales from Nigeria, Ireland, Mexico and China, made popular in picture books by prize-winning authors Verna Aardema, Tomie DePaola, Alma Flor Ada and Demi, as well as a couple of imaginative poems from international poets. All are presented with colorful props, costumes, puppetry, music, interwoven foreign languages, and plenty of audience participation. Once again, stories save the day!"
Aurora Children's Playhouse features puppeteers, magicians, storytellers, jugglers and musicians intended for youngsters to have their first theatrical experiences. At about 45 minutes in length, perfect for the young attention span, these lively performances are fun for the whole family. Aurora Children's Playhouse performances are held on select Saturday mornings at 10AM unless otherwise noted.
Programming in Aurora Theatre's 2012-2013 Aurora Children's Playhouse is possible through generous support from Metro Waterproofing and the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund.
